Which Render Is Right For Your Property?

South Wales weather is wet and wind-driven. The render you choose matters more here than it does inland.

Sand & Cement Render

The traditional choice, and still the most cost-effective. Applied in two coats and finished with a float or scratch texture. Tough and long-lasting, but it needs painting every 5–10 years to stay watertight. Best suited to solid-wall properties and garden or boundary walls.

Silicone Thin-Coat (K-Rend Type)

A through-coloured, breathable system that never needs painting. It sheds water while letting trapped moisture escape, which makes it a strong fit for exposed Cardiff and Caerphilly properties. Higher up-front cost, far lower maintenance over its life.

Lime Render

The correct choice for older, solid-wall and period properties. Lime lets a building breathe; sealing an old wall behind cement render traps moisture and causes damp. If your property pre-dates the 1920s, we will usually specify lime.

Pebbledash & Repairs

Plenty of South Wales housing stock is pebbledashed. We patch and re-dash to match the existing aggregate, or strip it back and re-render if you would rather move to a modern finish.

Plastering & Rendering FAQs

Common questions about plastering and rendering in Cardiff and Caerphilly.

Skimming is applying a thin layer of plaster to existing walls for a smooth finish. Dry lining involves installing plasterboard sheets on walls or ceilings before finishing. Both create smooth, flat surfaces ready for decoration.
Typically 2-3 weeks for full curing, though you can paint after 7-10 days. We advise allowing proper drying time for the best results.
Yes, we provide professional external rendering services including cement renders, thin coat systems, and decorative finishes to protect and enhance your property.
Usually yes. If the texture is shallow and sound we bond and skim straight over it, which is the quickest and cleanest option. Where the artex is heavily patterned or loose we overboard it instead. Artex applied before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, so we never sand or scrape it — we either skim over it or arrange licensed removal first.
Fine hairline cracks are normally shrinkage and are cosmetic. Cracks that run in a line, or areas that sound hollow when tapped, mean the render has lost its bond with the wall — usually from water getting behind it, or a mix that was too strong for the substrate. That needs cutting out and re-rendering, not filling. We will tell you which one you have before quoting.
For one or two rooms, no. We sheet up, work room by room and clear away each day. For a full re-plaster of an occupied house it is worth being elsewhere for the messiest days, mainly because of the drying time and humidity rather than the work itself.

Plastering Is Rarely The Only Job

We run the other trades in-house, so one team sees the work through instead of you chasing subcontractors.

Before the plaster

New openings, chased-in cables and re-built walls all need doing first. See our brickwork & masonry, electrical and plumbing services, or full renovations where the whole room is coming back to brick.

After the plaster

Once it is dry we can take it straight through to finished. See painting & decorating and tiling, or bundle it under multi-trade and save on the combined quote.

Bigger projects

Plastering and rendering are included as standard in our house extensions and loft conversions, priced as part of the build rather than as an extra.

Where we work

Plasterers and renderers covering Cardiff, Caerphilly, Newport, Penarth and Barry. See our pricing guide for typical costs.
